This unique 36-month contract role offers South Africans a meaningful opportunity to promote human rights, fairness, and accountability inside the country’s correctional centres.


🌍 About the ICCV Role

Independent Correctional Centre Visitors serve as independent watchdogs inside correctional facilities. They engage with inmates, assess conditions, and report on compliance with constitutional standards.

The role is crucial in protecting inmate rights, monitoring prison conditions, and ensuring the Department of Correctional Services adheres to humane treatment principles.

💼 Contract & Salary Details

  • Contract: 36 months (3 years)

  • Salary: R85,620 per annum (3/8th, Level 05), plus 37% in lieu of benefits


✅ Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a Grade 12 / Senior Certificate

  • Be computer literate and accurate

  • Attach a recommendation/nomination letter from a community organisation (not older than 6 months)

  • Have strong communication skills (verbal & written)

  • Be public-spirited with knowledge of Batho Pele principles

  • Work independently and under pressure

  • Preferably have a driver’s licence

  • Reside near the correctional centre for which they apply


📋 Key Duties

  • Conduct daily visits to the correctional centre

  • Engage with inmates and officials on complaints and concerns

  • Monitor and report on conditions, deaths, segregation, mechanical restraints, and use of force

  • Support JICS inspections and investigations

  • Capture and process inmate complaints

  • Compile detailed written reports
